PN Member Nicole Améline about UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women

In an interview for the French Parliamentary Channel (LCP), the network which broadcasts from the National Assembly of France, PN member Nicole Améline presented her work as Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. “Our mission is to promote the respect of women’s rights all over the world”, she said. The Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), adopted in 1979, is an important tool, she continued. The 187 signatory states accept that there is a need to take action against violence against women, for example by adopting appropriate laws. Although achievements have been made in various countries, she says, we see important setbacks in countries in transition and post-conflict societies. Those setbacks are so significant, Nicole Améline concludes, that today, a convention like CEDAW would not have a chance of being adopted again at a global level.
