Nicole Ameline entered politics in 1988, as deputy to Michel d'Ornano in the National Assembly of France, and took over from him on his death in 1991.

Re-elected in 1993, she gave up her mandate as a MP in June 1995 in order to join the government of Alain Juppé. She left the government in November and regained her seat in the elections of December 1995.

Nicole Ameline got re-elected in 1997 and 2002 and was Minister for Parity and Equality in the Workplace from 2002 to 2004.

Since 2008, she has been an elected member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, of which she served as Vice-Chairperson from 2011, until she took her current position as Chair in 2013.
