After the death sentences handed out by an Egyptian court against 529 supporters of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, PN Member Elmar Brok MEP issued the following statement:

"I am shocked and outraged by the mass sentencing of 529 representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood.
This harsh ruling is clearly disproportionate and must be seen in the context of the government's crackdown on civil society in Egypt. In the face of these developments, I find it very hard to believe that the Egyptian government is serious about carrying out real democratic reforms and fear that the adopted constitution is merely a facade hiding the government's real intentions."
