PN Member Elmar Brok Calls on Ukrainian Parliament to Continue Path of Responsible and Peaceful Co-operation

PN Member Elmar Brok MEP, Chairman of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, has led a delegation of the European Parliament to Kyiv/Ukraine. He issued the following statement:

"The last days have shown the extraordinary courage of the Ukrainian people at Kyiv’s Maydan and all over Ukraine in their strife for a modern, democratic state based on the rule of law and the respect of human rights. We also saw the sense of responsibility and courage of the leaders of the former opposition. The Ukrainian parliament is filling up the political and institutional vacuum in a legitimate way.

We met the new acting President of the country, Mr Turchynov, the leaders of the former opposition, representatives of Maidan, numerous Members of most of the factions of the Parliament, as well as the new General Prosecutor. We also spoke to Mrs Tymoshenko. We learnt that they want to build a country on the basis of the rule of law.

I call on all members of the Ukrainian parliament to continue this path of responsible and peaceful co-operation by forming a broad-based government willing to reform the country, and to guarantee the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and the unity of the society.

This government will stabilise the economic and financial situation of the country and ensure the competitiveness of its economy. Therefore the EU, the IMF and other international institutions must be ready for short-term and long-term packages for a better future of Ukraine.

We would also like to support the judicial authorities, to deal with the persons who are responsible for the violations of human rights and killings of people, for proper proceedings according to the rule of law. This will make all the difference with the misuse of the judicial system (including selective justice) by the former regime.

Russia, just like the EU, must live up to its responsibility for the stability and territorial integrity of Ukraine."

This statement is supported by the multi-party Delegation of the European Parliament, that was composed of 12 Members.
