PN Member Knut Fleckenstein Says No to Water Privatization

March 18, 2013

In the context of discussions on the European Commission’s proposal on the award of concession contracts, some media accuse the Commission of wanting to privatise the distribution of water. A European Citizens’ Initiative has been launched to invite the European Commission to propose legislation implementing the human right to water and sanitation, and promoting the provision of water and sanitation as essential public services for all.

In the light of these developments, PN member Knut Fleckenstein, MEP, and the parliamentary group of social democrats in the Hamburg Parliament (Germany) invite to a debate on "Hands off our water! For reliable public services", to be held in the City Hall of Hamburg on March 28, 2013 at 7 pm. The event aims at clarifying the European Commission's plans as well as the current state of negotiations in the European institutions.

Welcoming remarks: Sabine Steppat, Member of the Hamburg Parliament and Spokesperson for Europe

Moderator: Knut Fleckenstein MEP

Panelists:

  • Evelyne Gebhardt, MEP and Coordinator in the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection
  • Monika Schaal, Member of the Hamburg Parliament and Spokesperson for Environment
  • Dr. Michael Beckereit, Spokesperson, Hamburg Wasser (public water supply company)
