Marvi Memon Follows Up on Implementation of Pakistani Flood Commission's Recommendations

The worst flooding in Pakistan's history took place in 2010, when catastrophic inundations across the country killed almost 1,800 people and affected 21 million.In 2011, Monsoon floods killed 371 people and affected nearly 4.5 million. A Flood Commission was set up in December 2010 upon order of the Supreme Court and produced a report with recommendations to be implemented. 

PN member Marvi Memon expressed her dissatisfaction regarding the implementation by the irrigation secretaries in the Pakistani discricts Punjab and Sindh: “I am not satisfied with the response of the authorities after going through their bulky report regarding the implementation of the commission’s recommendations.”

The Supreme Court directed the secretaries of irrigation of Punjab and Sindh to visit areas affected by the 2010 floods and examine the encroachments on river beds and water channels. The secretaries have to submit a response to Marvi Memon’s objections by the next hearing set for March 20.
