Western Responses to the Ukraine Crisis

On 5 March 2014 Chatham House convened a special roundtable with a group of leading experts on Russia and Ukraine, and on the West’s relations with those countries. They considered options that are now available to the West in response to Russia’s actions in Crimea and other parts of Ukraine, and what impact they could have on the situation.

The meeting - held under the Chatham House Rule - included former ambassadors, business leaders and experts on various aspects of Russia, such as its economy, military and foreign policy. There was a wide range of views and opinions on the best way of handling the situation. It was suggested that the most effective near-term pressure that can be exerted on Russia will be financial and economic.
