PN Member Ine Eriksen Søreide Travels to U.S. to Discuss Common Security Concerns
Meeting this week with U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, PN member Ine Eriksen Søreide, Defense Minister of Norway, discussed a wide range of security issues including the evolving crisis in Iraq and the growing threat posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS).
During her trip to the U.S., Søreide also spoke at the Atlantic Council’s June 25 conference on "NATO in an Era of Global Competition" where she presented five key areas that the alliance needs to address:
- better share intelligence to gain more insight into its surrounding security environment,
- develop a more robust and active command structure, which can conduct the full spectrum of alliance tasks in an effective way,
- improve the readiness of NATO country forces,
- update NATO's contingency plans,
- conduct more training and exercises, based on “high-end, full spectrum scenarios.”
