Kidnapping Of Female Afghan Lawmaker Confirmed

Afghan officials have confirmed that a female member of parliament has been kidnapped. The police said on August 14 that Fariba Ahmadi Kakar was abducted over the weekend while traveling in the central Ghazni Province with her three children.

Ghazni Deputy Governor Muhammad Ali Ahmadi said security forces freed the children in an operation on August 12 but Kakar was being held at a different location and authorities are still searching for her.

The local police said the kidnappers are demanding the release of four Taliban prisoners. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said he had no information about the kidnapping.

Initially there was confusion about Kakar's disappearance. Her husband said she was not abducted and was in Turkey, while other relatives said she was in the hospital. Kakar's kidnapping follows last week's wounding of female senator Rooh Gul.
