Ana Maria Gomes has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2004. She is currently serving on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, as well as on the Subcommittee on Security and Defence.

Since 2002, Ana Maria Gomes has been a Member of the National Executive and Political Executive of the PS (Socialist Party). She is also a Member of the Portuguese branch of Amnesty International and of the Board of Governors of the European Endowment for Democracy.
