Mr. Spatz started his political career in the region of Bavaria, Germany, where he served as the deputy chairman of the Bavarian young liberals and where he held office in the Bavarian parliament between 1990 and 1994. Mr. Spatz held several positions within the Free Democratic Party’s (FDP) regional bodies, amongst which as a member of the Bavarian board and as chairman of the district division in lower Franconia. He also served as a member of the city council of Würzburg.

Mr. Spatz was a member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) from 2009 to 2013. As member of the committee on issues of the European Union, he was the spokesperson on European Affairs for the FDP Parliamentary Group. He also served as chairman of the subcommittee on civil crisis prevention, member of the defense committee and speaker for the liberal parliamentary group in the board of inquiry on Kunduz (Afghanistan).

Mr. Spatz studied mathematics and computer sciences at the University of Würzburg, where he also spent some time as a research associate. He is married and has one son.
