Mr. Wiersma is a Dutch politician and was a Member of the European Parliament. As a member of the Labour Party, he was vice-chair of the Party of European Socialists Group, and sat on the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs. He was also a member of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence, a substitute for the Committee on International Trade, a member of the Delegation for relations with the countries of south-East Europe, and a member of the delegation to the EU–Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.
