Mr. Georgi Pirinski was elected Member of the European Parliament in May 2014 where he is currently serving on the Committee on Budgetary Control and on the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. Mr. Pirinski is also member of the European Parliament's Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly and of the Delegation to the EU-Armenia, EU-Azerbaijan and EU-Georgia Parliamentary Cooperation Committees.
Prior to his mandate in the European Parliament, he was serving as advisor on parliamentary diplomacy to the President of the National Assembly of Bulgaria, Mihail Mikov.
From 2009 to 2013, Mr. Pirinski held the post of Vice-President of the National Assembly of Bulgaria and served on the Foreign Policy and Defense Committee. He was also a member of the Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and Deputy Chairman of the National Council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party.
His career in national politics of now more than 20 years started in 1990, when Mr. Pirinski was elected member of the 7th Grand National Assembly that adopted in July 1991 the new Bulgarian Constitution, marking the return to multi-party democracy. He has also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1995-1996) and as Speaker of the 40th National Assembly (2005-2009).
Mr. Pirinski’s political interests lie in progressive governance, international security, and regional cooperation.
