Japan and the EU as Development Aid Partners

The European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS) invites, in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to the EIAS Briefing Seminar: "Japan and the EU: Development Aid Partners". Mr. Glyn Ford, PN Member and EIAS Board Member, will deliver some introductory remarks.

The Briefing Seminar will be held at the European Institute for Asian Studies, Rue de la Loi 67, B-1040 Brussels, on Tuesday 28 May 2013, from 14:00 to 16:00.

Speakers will include:

• Mr. Aiichiro Yamamoto, Principal Representative of JICA to the EU
• Mr. Geert Laporte, Deputy Director, ECDPM

Japan and the EU: Development Aid Partners

Japan and the European Union both have considerable development aid programmes and are significant donors. At the same time, global development assistance is facing a major shift in approach as emerging donors are gaining a significant stake as development actors. Extended cooperation between Japan and the EU can contribute in supporting developing countries, as well as emerging donors, to set up effective and efficient development mechanisms. Since 2010, Tokyo and Brussels have started a development policy dialogue, building on the idea that development aid is a logical area for cooperation for both sides due to shared values. Furthermore, efforts for more EU aid coordination have brought the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to Brussels last year to pursue more intensive cooperation with the European Union.

This seminar will report on the EU-Japan Development Policy Dialogue in Tokyo early May 2013 and discuss the next steps to further the operationalisation of development aid cooperation between the EU and Japan.
