Joost Lagendijk has been a member of the European Parliament for the Dutch Green Left Party from 1999 to 2009. During his mandate at the European Parliament, he worked on foreign affairs, security and defense issues. He also served as Chairman of the Turkey Delegation of the European Parliament and rapporteur for the parliament on Kosovo.

Mr. Lagendijk started his political career in 1985. In 1998, he was campaign leader in the national parliamentary elections for GroenLinks.

Together with his colleague Jan Marinus Wiersma MEP, Joost Lagendijk has written three books, on the borders of Europe, the foreign policy strategies of the US and the EU and the European democratization policy towards the majority Muslim neighbor countries of the EU.

After his political career, Joost Lagendijk worked as senior advisor for the Istanbul Policy Centre in Istanbul from 2009 to 2012 and as lecturer at the Sabanci University in Istanbul. Since 2009 he has also been working as columnist for the Turkish dailies Zaman and Today's Zaman.
